Sketching before collaging?
Hi again
I have a question for all you mixed media artists reading this blog. As a watercolourist ( primarily ) I will usually do several small, thumbnail sketches before I start on a full size painting. I have not done much painting lately, as you will know if you have been following my progress. However, because I enjoy sketching, I often use a sketch before collaging especially if I am working to a theme, etc for a challenge. If I have been inspired by an image then this is often an unnecessary step and does not lead to a sketch. But working to a sometimes obscure (?) theme, I find it very helpful to clarify ideas for images to select.
This is one time when I should have gone with the flow. I was doing an ATC for the Paper Digital Art and ImagesbyKim site on the theme of "Circles". I had one or two ideas off the top of my head but decided that my circles would be bubbles.... coming from the mouth of a fish! I very briefly sketched out an idea, using images of (fisher)men in the bubbles. I had a picture of a fish which I had cut out of a magazine and added to my collection of such things - rubbish my OH calls them - and decided that to add a little interest some seaweed would be just the job:-
I don't know why but the seaweed had morphed into a number of die-cut "fishy" shapes. The sea was implied by using torn paper of different shades of blue. The bubbles were cut from images using a die cutter, which is why the other shapes were made in the same way. I was never quite happy with it, but as the challenge was nearly closing I went with it and submitted this ATC.
And the question? Do you ever use sketching to develop ideas for collages?

Hi John
no i tend to be lazy when it comes to sketching beforhand, even for paintings, i do like your final one, less is more!! Blowing Bubbles title.,
let me know if you do the cubism work at your art class, would love to see what you produce.
I don't sketch on page rather just ideas in my head. I like Blowing Bubbles for the title. I love what you came up for the digital creation of the ATC. ~Cassie

Hi John... only time I use a sketch is when I'm making a layout for a scrapbooky-syle collage or something like a mini-album. I'm far too impulsive to do it normally!
Personally, I like both ATCs!!
I don't sketch out my ideas either. I usually move my images around the page until I get what I like.
I like both collages but of the two I prefer the second one. I think the size of the bubbles also makes a difference.
Hi John
Happy to see your works. For ATC' I dont make sketch,I choose images and I try to make them working together.
See you.

Hiya John...loving the ATC!
Like you, a watercolour painter, I am used to sketching out designs and plans first and it seems to be a habit now whatever I make, whatever medium. I also tend to keep a notebook at hand wherever I go so that I can sketch out ideas and designs when ideas pop into my head....I may not necessarily be in my artroom and need to get the stuff down on paper before I forget it (mind like a sieve these days doh!). Must admit though, that some very nice pieces have been created on the spur of the moment without sketching and prior planning.
Ange.
I really like both of your collages, but I think I prefer the bottom one. I tend not to sketch things first, mainly because I don't have enough spare time and would rather get on with it. I tend to have a picture in my head and work to that, rearranging the various elements if they don't look quite right.
